Letter to members of the European Parliament Environment (ENVI) committee
The negotiations on key climate files of the Fit For 55 package which was launched by the European Commission in July 2021, are approaching critical moments. On 16-17 May, the Environment (ENVI) committee of the European Parliament will vote on the reports for the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS),
Sandbag has teamed up with other NGOs and industrial associations to ask members of that committee to phase out the handing out of free emissions permits as soon as possible, highlighting that free allocation is an obstacle to decarbonization, innovation and the well-functioning of the carbon market.
On April 22, a joint letter was sent to the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE), ahead of its vote on the opinion report. The Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) has shared competences with the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety (ENVI) on the specific topic of free allocation.
