EU ETS Dashboard

Navigate the emissions data covered by the EU Emissions Trading Scheme (ETS), at various granularity levels. Explore the average emissions per year by country and by sector and compare historical allowances covered by auctions, offsets and free allocation from 2004 to 2022.

What does the dashboard show?

The dashboard shows greenhouse gas emissions, the number of emission allowances issued (either for free or auctioned), and the system’s cap (theoretical limit on emissions). Until 2020, it also shows the use of “offsets”, which were carbon certified under the Kyoto Protocol, which were eligible in the EU ETS for compliance until 2020.

How can I use this dashboard?

The dashboard lets you explore historical data from the European Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) at different levels of granularity, by choosing different aggregation criteria, or individual installations through the map.

Where does the data come from?

Emissions data and most installation data were extracted from the EU Transaction Log (EUTL). However, Sandbag crossed this data with other sources to make it more useful. For example, we refined the EUTL sector split so that many installations classified as “Combustion” by the EUTL are dispatched into more relevant industrial sectors.
